The Remote Work Rule for AI
I have run remote companies since 2004. 2004. Remote work did not change what management is. It made you do all of it on purpose: clearer policies, scheduled check-ins, written expectations. AI is the exact same.
AI does not remove the management fundamentals. It makes you define goals, rules and a review cadence more precisely than you did before. The teams that fail at AI are the ones who assumed the tool would carry the discipline they never had.
The analogy that explains most AI failures
When companies went remote in 2020, the ones that struggled were rarely the ones with the worst video software. They were the ones whose in-office management had always been improvised. Hallway context. Unspoken norms. A manager walking the floor and reading faces. Take away the office and that scaffolding falls down. Remote work did not create the weakness. It exposed it.
What it means in practice
If your in-office management was vague, your remote management will be chaos. If your manual operations were undocumented, your AI-assisted operations will hallucinate. So tighten the fundamentals first, then add AI. The technology is an amplifier. An amplified weakness is still a weakness, just faster and wider.
Goals, Guardrails, Cadence
Define the goal the agent is pursuing. Set the rules it cannot cross. Establish the review cadence where a human checks the output. Those three are the same three things good remote managers already do. The difference with AI is that the cost of skipping one is paid immediately and repeatedly, because the system runs without the tired employee who would have caught the mistake.
Why "more AI" is rarely the fix
When an AI rollout stalls, the instinct is to buy a better model, add more agents, or wire in more tools. If the failure is a missing review cadence, no model upgrade restores it. Before adding intelligence, ask whether the underlying process could survive being done remotely, at speed, by someone who never gets tired and never asks a question. If the answer is no, fix the process. The AI will only make the gap louder.
One-line takeaway
AI is remote work for your operations. Do everything you did before, and do it on purpose.
